ONE STEP AHEAD, INC.       Family Owned Since 1989

One Step Ahead, Inc. is a team of 5 very talented individuals, owned and operated by two brothers, Bob and Tom Rigg, who started together in 1989.

Bob's concentration is in sales, design, consultation, bidding & installation.

Tom handles the office admin. and operations management portion, with the occasional installation when needed.

Our team:

Nathan is our wood shop foreman, with over 35 years in the industry.

He handles the manufacturing of all our wood staircase components, including  custom lathe turnings, of which he is second to none.

John is our metal fabricator, with over 35 years of experience as well.

Formally with Decorative Iron,  John joined us after the retirement and unfortunate passing of Keith Dickie, the founder of DI, and our shop landlord of 22 years.

John brings the expertise and experience to allow us the ability to offer welded metal railing systems, to complement our wood staircase component.

Brandon is our main on-site installer.  However, with his 25 years experience as a fine home builder, his versatility allows him to be very effective in either our wood shop or iron shop.

From the beginning back in 1989, our keystone philosophy has been Quality and Customer Service.  We believe our team is second to none in achieving both.

New Construction

The greater Seattle area is home to many beautiful high end residences, most of which include a custom designed and built staircase.  We are proud to have manufactured and installed over 150 of these in our 30 years together.  Working with top notch Architects, Designers, Builders and Craftsmen is truly an honor, and the satisfaction achieved from the end product is extraordinary.

From start to finish, we pride ourselves in quality and customer service.  It has been the keystone of our company for all these years, and will continue to be.

Shop Built
Framing Packages

Our "OSA-LAM" plywood framing packages have grown in popularity since we first started to offer them over 15 years ago.  Built with 2" thick laminated plywood, and 3/4" plywood sub-treads and sub-risers, they offer long term stability, with no squeaks over time, as well as shop built precision to ensure code compliance, and complicated details in the finished product, i.e. Newel Post placements, reveals etc..

In addition, we can also provide circular framing packages, whether laminated free-standing jacks or "wall-under", with sub-treads and sub-risers.
With a quick measure of the space, we can generally have a strong accurate OSA-LAM staircase framed in and usable within just a few days.

Staircase Upgrades

The staircase upgrade market has grown immensely in the last few years, due mainly to the housing boom this area experienced in the 1990's.  Many staircases were built back then that basically all looked the same, and now they are ready for updating to more current styles.

We can help with design ideas, and work within your schedule and budget.  There are very many styles to choose from, so click on the "Staircase Upgrade" tab at the top of the page for help with stairpart terminology, and a look at some different styles of staircases, to find the combination that best fits your home.

In addition, we also provide custom Treads/Risers/Nosings and Header Boards to several of the local quality hardwood companies in need of special sizes or species, or manufacturing treads out of the increasingly popular engineered flooring.

We can also provide Millwork packages at competitive prices.
